Decay is what happens to anything that stops being maintained. No event causes it and no decision begins it, which makes it the clearest available image of a loss produced entirely by absence of attention rather than by any act. Early decay describes a warning arriving while the situation is still recoverable. Decay is the ordinary consequence of holding something beyond the point at which it was useful. A person keeps an arrangement, a role, or an understanding long after its conditions have changed, and the keeping is generally done out of loyalty rather than laziness. That distinction matters enormously and is almost never made. Something spoiling in storage describes value that was preserved instead of being used. A room full of it describes a whole area of life run on the same principle. Loyalty and inertia produce identical results and are not the same thing. Preservation and use are competing strategies. Whatever is kept for later is being spent in a slower currency.
