A diary is the account a person keeps for nobody but themselves. An empty one describes a period that has gone unrecorded and may therefore be difficult to recall accurately. Rereading one describes a confrontation with a version of yourself who did not know how things would turn out. No audience means no editing. Unrecorded periods become unavailable rather than forgotten. The past self was writing without the ending.
The material in a private record is not selected for importance. Whatever felt pressing that day was written and whatever seemed obvious was omitted, which produces a document that is enormously informative about mood and unreliable about events. Dreaming of your private record being read is a violation of the deepest kind. What was yours alone is now known, and you had no say in it. If you were horrified, ask what part of yourself you cannot bear to have exposed. If you knew who read it, examine what that person now holds over you. If they said nothing afterward, notice the particular dread of being known and not addressed. If they understood you, the dream may be showing you that being fully seen is not always the catastrophe you have imagined. Dreaming of writing is a dream about the act of making sense. You are converting what is formless in you into language, and the psyche is watching how honestly you do it. If you lied in your own diary, notice how thoroughly a person can deceive even their most private self. If you wept while writing, the release is the entire purpose of the act.
