Dreaming of Digging

Digging removes rather than builds. Every stroke takes material away, and the hole that results was already present in the sense that the level being reached had always been there under everything covering it. Nothing is made by this activity. Somebody who knows what lies below is conducting a recovery; somebody who does not is conducting a search, and the two feel identical from inside and produce entirely different states after several hours. Hard ground has no relationship to what it conceals. Easy ground has none either. The difficulty of a removal and the value of what is under it are unconnected, which is the first thing anybody learns doing this work and the last thing they believe. Somebody who knows and somebody who guesses both end up at the same depth.
Digging produces a second thing that dreamers rarely attend to, which is the pile. Every quantity taken out of the ground is now sitting beside the hole, and it has to go somewhere. A heap larger than the excavation records how much has to be moved to reach very little. Material carried away by somebody else means another person is absorbing the consequences of your work, generally without being asked and frequently without being thanked. Ground that fills in behind you as you work describes something genuinely futile, and the sensation of that is unmistakable. The spoil is not waste. It is the same substance, relocated, and it will have to be dealt with by whoever is standing nearby when the work stops. Nothing is destroyed by this work; everything is relocated.
Down Rather Than Along
Digging is the only ordinary activity that proceeds vertically. Everything else a person does moves across a surface, considers alternatives at the same level, and can change direction at any point. This abandons all of that. A vertical search examines one location thoroughly and every other location not at all, which means the method is simultaneously the most reliable and the most narrow available. Finding nothing at a particular spot is a genuine result rather than a failure, and it eliminates a possibility that could not have been eliminated any other way. Moving and beginning again costs everything already spent. Anybody who suggests looking elsewhere is proposing that a considerable investment be written off, and the suggestion is generally correct and almost never welcome. A considerable investment written off is still an investment that produced a result.
The Absence That Remains
Digging leaves a permanent alteration in the ground, and the alteration outlasts every reason for having made it. Holes do not close. Filling one in produces a patch of disturbed earth that behaves differently from everything around it and will continue behaving differently for decades. Water collects in them. Things fall into them. The ground immediately surrounding an excavation is weakened by the removal, which is why anybody standing near a hole is standing somewhere less stable than they were. Consider what your own removals have left. A person who has dug in several places has produced a landscape that nobody planned and that everybody afterward has to walk across.
Dreaming of Digging and Finding Something
Dreaming of unearthing something is the culmination the psyche has been working toward. What was buried has been recovered, and now you must decide what it means. If it was valuable, ask what worth in yourself or your history you have just recovered. If it was terrible, examine what you have unearthed that you cannot now rebury. If you did not recognize it, notice that some discoveries take years to understand. If you left it in the ground, the dream may be describing a truth you have found and refused. What is dug up cannot be unfound. The dream asks what you have uncovered, and what you are going to do with it.
Dreaming of Digging in the Wrong Place
Dreaming of realizing you have been digging in the wrong spot names a misdirected effort. All that labor, and the thing you sought was never there. If you were furious, ask what pursuit in your life has consumed years and produced nothing. If you had been told to dig there, examine who directed your effort and why you trusted them. If you had to start again, notice the particular despair of returning to the beginning after so much work. If you saw the right place, the dream may be showing you where you should have been looking all along. Effort does not become correct simply by being sustained. The dream asks what you have been searching for in a place it was never buried.
Dreaming of Being Buried While Digging
Dreaming of the ground collapsing on you while you dig is one of the psyche's most alarming images. Your own excavation has turned against you, and what you were investigating has closed over you. If you could not get out, ask what inquiry into yourself has begun to overwhelm you. If the walls came down, examine whether you have gone deeper into your own past than you are equipped to survive alone. If you could not breathe, notice that this image often accompanies a self examination that has become dangerous. If someone dug you out, the dream may be describing help you need and can accept. Some depths require a companion. The dream asks whether you are searching alone in a place you should not be alone in.
Dreaming of Someone Else Digging
Dreaming of watching another person dig places the excavation outside you. Someone is looking for something, and you are witnessing rather than laboring. If you feared what they would find, ask what truth about you is being uncovered by someone else. If you helped them, examine what search you have joined and whether it is truly yours. If you tried to stop them, notice what you are determined to keep buried. If they were digging your grave, the dream may be describing an ending being prepared for you. Not every excavation is your own. The dream asks who is digging in your ground, and what they expect to find there.
